Señor Don Gato

Señor Don Gato

O Señor Don Gato was a cat.
On a high red roof Don Gato sat.
He was there to read a letter,
Meow, meow, meow!
Where the reading light was better,
Meow, meow, meow!
‘Twas a love-note for Don Gato!

“I adore you,” wrote the lady cat,
Who was fluffy white, and nice and fat.
There was not a sweeter kitty,
Meow, meow, meow!
In the country or the city
Meow, meow, meow!
And she said she’d wed Don Gato!

O Señor Don Gato jumped so happily
He fell off the roof and broke his knee,
Broke his ribs and all his whiskers,
Meow, meow, meow!
And his little solar plexus
Meow, meow, meow!
“Ay Caramba!” cried Don Gato.

All the doctors they came on the run,
Just to see if something could be done.
And they held a consultation,
Meow, meow, meow!
About how to save their patient,
Meow, meow, meow!
How to save Señor Don Gato.

But in spite of everything they tried,
Poor Señor Don Gato up and died.
No, it wasn’t very merry,
Meow, meow, meow!
Going to the cemetery,
Meow, meow, meow!
For the ending of Don Gato.

But as the funeral passed the market square,
Such a smell of fish was in the air,
Though the burial was slated,
Meow, meow, meow!
He became reanimated,
Meow, meow, meow!
He came back to life, Don Gato!

Apparently, this was originally a Mexican rhyme that transmogrified into a traditional American song. Here's the Spanish version. I must thank Chris, Chaos, and May for reminding me of this wonderful tune, which I hadn't heard in years. Now we can all sing along...meow meow meow!

Lol, that's a nice song, I never heard it ! This afternoon I will pick up little Rosel and probably have a very busy afternoon ! I only hope that the others will accept her easily. But as she is a kitten I don't think that there would be any territory problems. I surely have a lot to write in the future !

That's so cute...meow, meow, meow!

How nice that it has a happy ending, presumably Don Gato and his lovely white lady friend became...er...more closely acquainted...hmmmm?

I loved that song! In the third grade, my enthusiastic singing of it in music class got me a part in the christmas play as "Frostbite #1"! I had forgotten the words, but the tune has stuck with me all these years. I used to get so emotional during the part where he breaks his solar plexus [which we all suspected was something naughty] and died, and so joyous when he came back to life. Thanks for this!

We are glad he got re-animated!
We saw that fish in the picture! It does look like salmon. We would get re-animated too!

This song was new to me, as well. I enjoyed it! And you did such a nice job with the pics to go along with the words!

Hey babe, I just thought I'd drop you a line and let you know that I was working at woven art today and a box came in from "wild fibers." I didn't open it 'cause it was sort of busy but I'm pretty sure the new Wild Fibers is in.

And Cats are cute on Tuesday and anyother day of the week.

That is such a terrific song. I am stealthily blogging in a class now instead of paying attention so I cannot listen to the song (don't you love wireless internet??). But had to tell you the lyrics to the song are really good and I'm glad that there was a happy ending!

We sang this is in my elementary school in 1967 in Ohio. We loved the "meow meow meow" part the best.
