Lost in the Muzak

1979

I did think it was a bit eerie when, about ten years ago, I heard a Muzak version of The Clash's "Lost in the Supermarket" playing while I was shopping in my local Foodtown (yes, that's a supermarket). It was an instrumental Muzak version, but who can listen to that and NOT hear the lyrics?

I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
Guaranteed personality...

Seeing as I generally feel somewhat lost in the supermarket, I felt this was rather apropos, and just a tad humorous. Or should I say ironic? I'm not sure. Also, a bit melancholic, that The Clash had become Muzak. Or had some very clever Muzak-making sound guy chosen that particular song thinking how funny and terribly ironic it would be to have "Lost in the Supermarket" playing in supermarkets across the nation? I'll never know.

1982

So perhaps I should not have been the least bit surprised--much less actually disturbed--to hear the Violent Femmes fabulous "Blister in the Sun" riff backing a Wendy's commercial during this evening's Lost [another potentially lost cause that I just can't seem to bring myself to give up on].

Ah, my friends...what is the world coming to?

[Picture me here hanging my head and wringing my hands, gnashing my teeth and sharpening my talons...]

Fists held high screaming:

"WHY WHY WHY?"

I have seen this lately too and it just disturbs me...
